My most memorable moment in China? As cliché as it sounds, my visit to the Great Wall of China stands out vividly. I had taken my students, an adorable group of 10 year olds on a field trip to the great wall at Mutianyu. Climbing up from the parking area was in itself an incredible experience. The quaint little stalls selling souvenirs, although quite touristy, were still worlds apart from modern China with its hustle and bustle. The stall keepers with rosy cheeks, wearing layers of skirts and sweaters, draped in shawls, looked like characters from a story book as they welcomed us with toothy smiles.
My students and I had a great time climbing up the innumerable steps – and learning English vocabulary along the way. Once we reached the top, I honestly do not know what came over me, but I started twirling on the ramparts of the magnificent wall! I was an ancient Chinese empress! I was a Flying Dragon. That is until my students started giggling to see ‘Teacher’ acting crazy!
